Category: Shrubs | Wildlife | Bird Habitat | GreatPlants for the Great Plains | Dry Site | Mesic Site The Regent Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Regent’) is a compact native shrub celebrated for its spring flowers, edible fruit, and exceptional toughness. In early spring, it produces large white blossoms that attract pollinators and signal the start of the growing season! Flowers are followed by dark purple to nearly black berries that are sweet, flavorful, and excellent for fresh eating, baking, and jelly-making. The fruit is also highly valued by birds and wildlife, making this shrub a standout for edible and habitat-focused landscapes. As it matures, Regent Serviceberry tolerates harsh conditions, including dry, alkaline soils, and adapts well to rain gardens and variable moisture sites. Its gray-green foliage turns yellow to red in fall, adding seasonal color to smaller landscapes. A 2007 GreatPlants Shrub of the Year, this cultivar is especially well suited for Great Plains gardens, offering beauty, productivity, and resilience in a manageable size.
